Writing Prompt: Noises My Mother Made
MY MOTHER’S WINSTONS
What is the noise of smoke?
Silky sigh of exhalation.
She was calmest then,
for a moment.
Click of Bic lighter,
rainbow colors,
I brought them to her
in the retirement home.
And the cartons
and cartons of smokes.
Later, she moved
to the assisted living floor.
Couldn’t smoke unless
she went outside.
An act more difficult
than her desire for a cigarette.
Then she forgot she smoked.
In the end, the noise of smoke
is a rattle.
